Herbal Medicine
Plants have long been used for healing and herbal medicine is a well-researched area of natural healing.
In their whole form, herbs contain a synergistic combination of constituents which make them safe and remarkably effective. The complex array of phytochemicals in the root, stem, leaf or flower of a plant directly targets certain organs or systems of the body. Most herbs act as tonics to bring about balance wherever it is required. Others have more direct actions, for example to raise or lower blood pressure, alter hormone patterns, increase or decrease stomach hydrochloric acid, to improve cognitive (brain) function or to act as an anti-inflammatory to the joints.
Preserved in tinctures, a mixture of herbs can be tailored to the health conditions of an individual. The different tastes of the herbs are sometimes sweet, refreshing or bitter depending on their purpose. The bitter glycosides in plants tend to be cleansing to the body, particularly as they stimulate liver function and liver detoxification pathways. Whilst they may not taste delicious, they bring about a rapid improvement in many conditions, including skin and digestive disorders, liver, respiratory, reproductive and hormonal imbalances, kidney function and immunity.
Our Naturopath prescribes herbs holistically to assist in detoxification and support of physical well-being. Like all food, herbs have different energetic qualities. For those seeking a more meditative approach to life the very stimulating or rajasik herbs are avoided and a light, green, chlorophyll rich sattvik formula will be created. Where the vitality of a person is very low, herbal tonics are made with nutritive, gentle herbs given in low doses. The anti-oxidant action of plants is increased in a herbal tincture and so they can be used for maintenance of health, prevention of future conditions and as direct treatment in disease states.
When orthodox medications are being used concurrently with natural medicine, Chandrika ensures that any herbs prescribed will not interfere in the necessary drug actions. In some cases your existing physician may be prepared to work closely with your naturopath to lower the dosage of prescribed medications. In other situations it is wisest to support the action of the drug and treat the organs of elimination to minimize side effects.
Where liquid tinctures are not suitable, Surya Health also carries a range of herbal tablets and dried herbs for teas. These may be well indicated for some conditions due to their palatability and more subtle actions. As part of a healthy lifestyle, herbs can play a valuable role in culinary enjoyment and wellness.
At Surya House many herbs are growing and more are planted each season. Ask about how to incorporate herbs into your garden and lifestyle for maximum benefits to humans and the earth.
